Friday night of San Francisco Cocktail Week, the Old Mint building was opened for a beautiful event arranged by the Bon Vivants, with punch provided by some of the city’s best cocktail bars and expert bartenders. There were clowns, jugglers, acrobats, contortionists, a brass band, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and almost nobody there to see it.
Perhaps the hundred dollar price tag was cost prohibitive, but it was worth every penny. A nasty rumor circulated that there were 2oo comps given, but a measly 13 tickets sold.
All the well-heeled attendees meandered through the vaults, and I suspect that half never made it to the back room, accessible through the Gold Vault. Tables were carefully arranged with trinkets, baubles and ephemera, and punches were mixed to exacting specifications. The clowns, in character from before the front doors opened wandered through the early arrivals and continued through the night until the brass band lit up the space and got everyone moving , and the small but affable crowd continued drinking and dancing until 2:00.
Overall, an incredible night. It’s too bad you weren’t there.
